Iron Infusion
Iron deficiency can cause fatigue, breathlessness or dizziness. An iron infusion may be recommended if you have low iron levels (iron deficiency anaemia) that cannot be effectively treated with oral iron supplements.
Your doctor will review your history and blood tests and determine if an iron infusion is right for you. The infusion takes place in a day hospital or infusion unit where a small intravenous cannula is placed in your arm and iron is slowly infused over 15-30 minutes. You will be monitored for any reactions.
Iron infusions are generally safe but may cause mild side effects like headache, nausea, or a metallic taste. Rare risks include allergic reactions, which are managed promptly by medical staff.
Most patients’ symptoms of iron deficiency resolve within days of the infusion.
